LONDON – Teenage fast bowler Mohammad Amir, one of three Pakistan cricketers jailed in England for spot-fixing, was released on Wednesday because of good behavior after serving half of his six-month sentence.

The 19-year-old Amir was freed from a young offenders’ institution in Weymouth, southwest England.

“Amir is in high spirits and he will meet with his lawyers to decide when to appeal in Court of Arbitration against ICC’s five-year suspension,” Amir’s mentor, Asif Bajwa, said after speaking to the player. “Now that he has served his punishment, I am very optimistic that ICC will also look into the long term suspension.”

                European Pressphoto Agency

A file picture of Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Amir arriving at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, Pakistan, Feb. 8, 2011.

After his release, Amir released a statement that only referred to Pakistan’s recent victories over England in their first test matches since the fixing-tainted 2010 series.

“I am delighted for the Pakistani cricket team. My thoughts are with them,” Amir said in a statement. “I wish them every success. I will not be making any further comment.”

Amir pleaded guilty before the trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court last year. Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and bowler Mohammad Asif are still serving their sentences after being convicted of also fixing part of a test against England at Lord’s in August 2010.

Butt was jailed for two-and-a-half years and Asif for one-and-a-half years after they and Amir ensured no-balls were bowled at specific times.

Agent Mazhar Majeed received the stiffest sentence — two years, eight months — after being secretly filmed by a tabloid journalist accepting £50,000 and saying three players would help fix betting markets.

Majeed was said to be the architect of the betting scam, along with Butt.

All three players are serving five-year bans from cricket imposed by the International Cricket Council.

The scam that forced the authorities into launching its most widespread corruption investigation was uncovered by investigators from the now-defunct News of the World tabloid.

Amir, who had been likened to all-time great Pakistan left-arm fast bowler Wasim Akram, is the youngest player to take 50 wickets in just 14 test matches.

Trial judge Jeremy Cooke described Amir as “unsophisticated, uneducated and impressionable” and “readily leant on by others,” but said there was evidence that he also discussed rigging an earlier match with a betting contact in Pakistan.

bureau chief
islamabad: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said he will appear before the Supreme Court in contempt case. ” I will accept any decision of the apex court including imprisonment,” Gilani told the media after inauguration of Pakistan’s first business train, which is being run under the private sector. Replying a question the prime minister said that the Senate elections will be held as per the announced schedule. A conspiracy was being hatched by some quarters to stop the Senate polls, which will be exposed soon, he further said.
PM said Clash of institutions to be avoided at all costs. Earlier Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani has said that the Senate elections will be held on time after which the present government will present its fifth ‘Awami Budget’, an unprecedented event in the history of Pakistan. He was speaking to journalists at Lahore Railways Station, after inaugurating the country’s first private sector run train, ‘Pak Business Express’, on Friday. Prime minister pointed out that he indicated some six months back that some elements were hatching conspiracies against the government to stop Senate polls. However, in a few days these conspiracies will unfold, he said, noting that media persons should wait as they would soon be made privy to the reality behind such conspiracies. Gilani underlined that after the Senate elections if any person or party, is interested in early elections, they should contact him. He pointed out that he was the longest serving consensus Prime Minister till date in the history of Pakistan.
Responding to question about the Supreme Court’s proceedings, Prime Minister Gilani said, “It is our own court. I respect its decisions and would appear before it as and when called”. He avoided question about writing a letter to Swiss authorities for reopening of graft cases, by stating that the matter was sub-judice in the court of law. However, he explained that the government had never intended to confront any institution and would not go for any such move in the future.
